Today, June 1st 2017 the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction works of the new International Specialized Hospital of Uganda (ISHU) was celebrated, at the presence of the President of the Republic of Uganda, His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and over 500 guests of which over 100 distinguished international guests in Lubowa, south from Kampala, Uganda.
LC & Partners Engineering Consultants have been appointed as Project Management and Works Supervision Consultants throughout the entire development of the impressive ISHU healthcare complex, which will include a world-class internationally accredited 264 beds hospital, residences for senior staff, doctors and nurses, a specialized training school, a conference and exhibition center for healthcare related events and a budget hotel for relatives and friends of the patients for a total of over 85,000 square meters of new built up area. The Complex will be immersed in a rehabilitation park, in a 300.000 sqm plot close to the Kampala-Entebbe road, property of the Government of Uganda – Ministry of Health.
Eng. Lorenzo Candelpergher, LC&P’s Chairman and CEO, as Project Director for ISHU, shall lead a dedicated team of 25 LC&P’s professionals working in Kampala, Dubai and Milan to ensure the effective management and coordination of this challenging project for which the design activities will be developed from Italy in parallel with the construction, taking place in Kampala, and the procurement of the medical equipment, coordinated in Dubai, where the overall Project Controls will be implemented over the entire, very ambitious time framework for the targeted project completion within 2019.
The International Specialized Hospital of Uganda is designed to be modern while embedding comfortably on the site and within the surrounding context. The architecture is based on an organic and sensible approach as the buildings are adapting to the natural slope of the plot, creating a breathtaking ensemble. The complex is intended to become the 1st LEED Silver certified green building of Uganda.
The International Specialized Hospital of Uganda will dramatically improve specialized medical service in the country, offering tertiary care procedures for different areas, such as cancer detection and treatment, hearth diseases, neurosurgery and organs transplant. The hospital will also include, among others, a major Accident and Emergency Department, Critical Care, Intensive Care, Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care Departments, Dialysis, Chemotherapy, Bone Marrow Transplant, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Oncology, Nuclear Medicine and Brachytherapy Departments, in addition to General Medicine, General Surgery and Pediatrics Departments.
The facility will be the key referral center for Ugandan patients, as well as the first one in East Africa Region to have a cyclotron for nuclear medicine, projecting the country as a future medical tourism destination.
The hospital will also be a training center for young doctors and nurses. The highly specialized facilities will attract back skilled Ugandan healthcare professionals working abroad to perform with state-of-the-art equipment in their country, contributing to a new chapter of the National Development.
Finasi Group, specialized in medical facilities planning and supply of medical equipment, with extensive international experience including several African countries, is the promoter of the project, selected among others by the Government of Uganda to finance, design, construct, equip and operate for 8 years the International Specialized Hospital of Uganda, which will be owned by the Ministry of Health.
Finasi will also be the main contractor, supplying and installing the medical equipment and the furniture in all the buildings.
Roko Construction, leading civil contractor in Uganda, will be responsible for the construction of the healthcare complex.
Progetto CMR, leading Italian architectural firm, designed the entire facility, under the artistic creativity of Arch. Massimo Roj.
